The beautiful facade is not what is true. It's just the persona displayed when the depressed have to engage in everyday tasks; the public face that lures people to believe everything is alright. Melancholy - Birds and Bath
Having come home and found one my finches dead in his cage, I removed him and held his still limp body in my hand. I took pictures of him and wondered if his death was painful. Was he ill? Or did he just drift away in a slumber like the warm feeling of blood rushing out of a slit wrist into a warm tub releasing the unbearable pain of the effects of prolonged depression. 40"x30", acrylic on canvas, 12/2016

Melancholy - Knife, Woods, Storm and River
With a figure floating in the trees and yet grounded by the city below, this surrealistic image deals with the struggles of depression, the confusion of identity and thoughts of suicide. Being depressed often involves self isolation and continuous negative thoughts about oneself. The girl has hidden her identity with her body and face covered only allowing limbs to be exposed. The isolation, even within a crowded city, was not eased by moving. Without help, she will succumb to the ominous storm. acrylic on canvas, 55"x47", 12/2016
